John K. Sheffield My association with the pecan industry began in 1971. I started out in the buying and selling of pecans at the wholesale level. In 1973 I became partners with Ronald Webb of Madison County, Florida. This enabled us to more than double our buying area and capacity. In 1974 we started a commercial spraying business that has continued until 1990. In 1976 we began a commercial shaking business. In the fall of 1978 we purchased a warehouse in Madison Florida to enhance our business. In early 1979 I purchased the Webb interest and formed Sheffield Pecan Company. Through various leases and services the company continued to grow and expand with the purchase of a Monticello, Florida warehouse in 1982, to compliment the Madison County warehouse operation. In September of 1984 I represented Florida on the SUSTA (Southern United States Trade Association team. We explored expansion of the foreign market visiting buyers and importers in London, England, Hamburg, Germany and Utrecht (Netherlands). Our product was exhibited at International Food Shows there. We are exporting to France this year. During the time since 1984 we have developed a bag film with company logo and we have developed a shelled meats market approaching one half million dollars annually. And in 1988, I was elected President of the Florida Pecan Growers Association. In 1994 we went high-tech and became the first agri-business on the Internet in Florida. We also have developed a mail order business and have several large fundraising customers. We hope to expand this segment in dealing with various schools, churches, and civic organizations throughout the country. We have a simple but successful business philosophy; sell only the highest quality products to eliminate complaints and generate a growing, satisfied customer base.
